◷ 7-minute read◈ Examples & tables✓ Hindi help in Roman script

Difficult English words become easier when you learn what they mean, how they behave in a sentence, and when they are useful. A word can be difficult because of its spelling, pronunciation, or a confusingly similar word. You do not need rare vocabulary simply to sound impressive.

This lesson selects 30 useful words and gives short English explanations, Roman-script Hindi help, and original example sentences. Difficulty depends on the learner; the list is a practical study selection rather than an official ranking.

Affect and effect

For a useful starting pattern, use “affect” as a verb meaning influence and “effect” as a noun meaning result. English also has less common uses, so this is not a claim that the words never have other grammatical roles.

The weather affected the match.
The change had an effect on ticket sales.

Advice and advise

“Advice” is normally uncountable in this meaning. Say “some advice” or “a piece of advice,” not “an advice.” “Advise” is the verb.

Thank you for your advice.
Could you advise me about the application?

Borrow and lend

The action is viewed from different sides. If I borrow your book, you lend it to me. Add the people to your practice sentence so you can see the direction clearly.

Hinglish help: “Maine usse book udhaar li” = I borrowed the book from her. “Maine use book udhaar di” = I lent the book to her.

Useful words for study and work

Relevant Connected to the matter being discussed Vishay se juda hua Include experience relevant to the role.
Reliable Able to be trusted or depended on Bharosemand We need a reliable way to record orders.
Accurate Correct and sufficiently exact Sahi / sateek Check that the address is accurate.
Concise Brief while keeping the necessary information Kam shabdon mein saaf Write a concise summary of the meeting.
Clarify Make something clearer Saaf karna / spasht karna Could you clarify the deadline?
Prioritise Decide what needs attention first Zaroorat ke hisaab se pehle rakhna We must prioritise urgent repairs.
Evaluate Judge carefully using relevant information Jaanch kar aankna Compare the options before you evaluate the proposal.
Feasible Possible and practical to carry out Amal mein laana mumkin Is this plan feasible with our budget?
Consequence A result of an action or situation Nateeja Consider the consequences before changing the schedule.
Discrepancy A difference between things expected to agree Antar / bemel hona There is a discrepancy between the receipt and the total.

Learn combinations, not only meanings

Words often appear in useful combinations: “relevant experience,” “accurate information,” “clarify a point,” and “evaluate an option.” Write a phrase that matches something you actually do.

“Concise” does not mean removing information the reader needs. A concise request still states the purpose, the important details, and the response required. Try using that principle in the letter-writing exercises.

“Feasible” concerns whether something can reasonably be done. It does not automatically mean that it is the best choice. You might say, “Both dates are feasible, but Friday is more convenient.”

Words with spelling patterns worth noticing

Word Meaning Hindi help Original example
Necessary Needed for a purpose Zaroori Bring only the necessary documents.
Separate Not joined; to keep apart Alag / alag karna Keep the receipts in a separate folder.
Receive Get something Paana / milna Did you receive my message?
Accommodation A place to stay Rehne ki jagah We need accommodation near the station.
Opportunity A chance to do something Mauka This project is an opportunity to practise.
Responsibility A duty or something you must take care of Zimmedaari Checking the list is my responsibility.
Environment The surroundings or conditions Mahaul / paryavaran Choose a quiet environment for recording.
Familiar Known or recognised Jaana-pehchaana Start with a familiar topic.
Thorough Complete and careful Poori aur saavdhaani se ki gayi Give the document a thorough review.
Rhythm A pattern of beats, sounds, or movement Lay / taal Listen to the rhythm of the sentence.

Notice the difficult part

Mark only the section you repeatedly miss. “Necessary” has one “c” and two “s” letters. “Accommodation” has two “c” letters and two “m” letters. “Separate” contains “par,” not “per,” in the middle spelling.

The “i before e” rhyme is not a complete spelling rule. Learn “receive” in its actual form rather than treating a rhyme as reliable for every English word.

Check pronunciation with audio

English spelling does not always make pronunciation obvious. “Thorough” and “rhythm” are useful examples to check in a learner's dictionary. Listen to the available accent recording, say the word, then put it in your own sentence.

Avoid treating a Roman-script Hindi approximation as an exact pronunciation guide. It may hide a sound contrast or stress pattern. The Hindi column on this page explains meaning, not sound.

For a dictionary reference, use Cambridge Dictionary or another established learner's dictionary. Check the particular entry and grammatical sense you need; a word may have more than one meaning. This article's explanations and examples are written for the lesson, not copied dictionary definitions.

A five-word practice method

Choose five words rather than reading the table repeatedly. For each one:

  1. Write its meaning in your own words.
  2. Add a useful phrase, such as “accurate information.”
  3. Write one true sentence about your life or work.
  4. Cover the word and try to recall it from the meaning.
  5. Check it again in a later session.

Here is an example vocabulary card:

Word: clarify
Meaning: make something clearer
Phrase: clarify the deadline
My sentence: I'll ask the teacher to clarify the deadline before I plan my work.

If you cannot make a natural sentence with a word yet, look at its grammatical pattern and try a simpler example. You do not need to force all five words into one conversation.

Avoid unnatural “advanced” English

Compare these messages:

Kindly furnish an expeditious clarification regarding the temporal parameters.

Could you confirm the deadline?

The second message is easier to understand. A more formal or technical word is useful when it adds precision, not when it merely makes a sentence harder to read.

For everyday exchanges, use the daily-use sentences. For a longer learning routine, place vocabulary practice within the English study plan.

Check your understanding

  1. Complete: Could you give me some advice / advise?
  2. Complete: The change may affect / effect our plans.
  3. If you take a friend's book temporarily, do you borrow or lend it?
  4. Correct the spelling: accomodation.
  5. Which word means a difference between two records expected to match?
  6. Replace “Please make the explanation more clear” with a sentence using “clarify.”

Answers: 1. Advice. 2. Affect. 3. Borrow. 4. Accommodation. 5. Discrepancy. 6. One possible answer: “Could you clarify the explanation?” Another is “Could you clarify that point?”.

Use one new word accurately

Choose a word from the tables and write a sentence you might genuinely say. Check its meaning and pattern, then use it again in a different context. Accurate use is a more useful goal than collecting impressive-looking vocabulary.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Which English words are the most difficult?

There is no universal list. Your first language, experience, and purpose affect which words are unfamiliar. Choose vocabulary you encounter or need to use.

Should I replace simple words with difficult ones?

Only when the new word expresses the intended meaning more accurately. “Use” is often better than a longer alternative if it says exactly what you mean.

Will these words guarantee a higher exam score?

No. An exam may assess accuracy, appropriateness, organisation, and other skills. A word list does not establish a score or replace understanding the task.
