◷ 7-minute read◈ Examples & tables✓ Hindi help in Roman script

Daily-use English sentences help you ask for something, explain a small problem, and respond politely. Start with phrases you need in your own life. Learn the situation and reply as well as the sentence, so you can use it in a conversation.

The Hindi meanings below use Roman-script Hinglish. A natural translation may use different words from the English sentence. Where a Hindi verb changes with the speaker, choose the form that fits you, such as “karta hoon” or “karti hoon.”

Start with requests and clarification

These phrases are useful when you need help or do not understand something.

English Hindi meaning (Hinglish)
Could you help me, please? Kya aap meri madad kar sakte hain?
Could you say that again? Kya aap woh dobara keh sakte hain?
Please speak a little more slowly. Kripya thoda dheere boliye.
What does this word mean? Is shabd ka kya matlab hai?
Could you show me an example? Kya aap mujhe ek example dikha sakte hain?
Do you mean this one? Kya aapka matlab is wale se hai?
Let me check. Mujhe check karne dijiye.
I don't understand yet. Mujhe abhi samajh nahi aaya hai.

“Could you…?” is a useful polite request. You can change the action: “Could you open the window?” or “Could you send the address?”. It does not mean that “Can you…?” is always impolite; tone and situation matter too.

At home and with family

English Hindi meaning (Hinglish)
Is breakfast ready? Kya naashta taiyaar hai?
I'll be ready in ten minutes. Main das minute mein taiyaar ho jaaoonga/jaaoongi.
Where did I leave my keys? Maine apni chaabiyaan kahan rakhi thin?
Please turn off the light. Kripya light band kar dijiye.

I've already eaten. Main pehle hi kha chuka/chuki hoon.
Let's have dinner together. Chaliye saath mein dinner karte hain.
I'll wash the dishes. Main bartan dho doonga/doongi.

Notice “I've already eaten”: it tells the listener that eating has happened before now. You do not need to translate every word separately to use the complete phrase.

At school or college

English Hindi meaning (Hinglish)
Which chapter are we studying? Hum kaunsa chapter padh rahe hain?
May I ask a question? Kya main ek sawaal pooch sakta/sakti hoon?
I haven't finished the assignment yet. Maine abhi tak assignment poora nahi kiya hai.
When do we need to submit it? Humein ise kab submit karna hai?
Could I borrow your notes? Kya main aapke notes kuch samay ke liye le sakta/sakti hoon?
Let's compare our answers. Chaliye apne jawaab milaate hain.
I think the answer is different. Mujhe lagta hai jawaab alag hai.
Shall we practise the presentation? Kya hum presentation ki practice karein?

If you are meeting your classmates for the first time, prepare a separate self introduction. These phrases help with the conversation that follows.

At work

English Hindi meaning (Hinglish)
Could you confirm the deadline? Kya aap deadline confirm kar sakte hain?
I'll send the file this afternoon. Main aaj dopahar ko file bhej doonga/doongi.

Who should I contact about this? Is baare mein mujhe kisse sampark karna chahiye?
There seems to be an error in the total. Lagta hai total mein galti hai.
Thanks for pointing that out. Is baat par dhyaan dilaane ke liye dhanyavaad.

“There seems to be…” leaves room for checking. It can be useful when you suspect a mistake but have not confirmed it. Be direct when a clear, immediate instruction is needed.

How much does this cost? Iski keemat kitni hai?
Do you have this in a larger size? Kya yeh bade size mein hai?

I'll take this one. Main yeh wala loonga/loongi.

Practise a price with the English numbers chart. To name ingredients at a shop, use the vegetable vocabulary guide.

Could you take a message? Kya aap ek message note kar sakte hain?
Sorry, I called the wrong number. Maaf kijiye, maine galat number mila diya.

The ingredient question is a language example, not a guarantee about a restaurant's food. If an ingredient is important to you, explain your requirement clearly and check the response.

Polite replies and small problems

English Hindi meaning (Hinglish)
No problem. Koi baat nahi.
Thanks for waiting. Intezaar karne ke liye dhanyavaad.

Turn phrases into a conversation

Example: checking a deadline

A: Could you confirm the deadline?
B: Please send it by Friday afternoon.
A: Thank you. I'll send the file before lunch.
B: That works. Let me know if you need anything.

Example: exchanging an item

A: Do you have this in a larger size?
B: Yes. Would you like to try it?
A: Yes, please. Where is the changing room?
B: It's at the back of the shop.

Change a detail and continue. What if the larger size is unavailable? You might ask, “Do you have a similar one?”. Learning a follow-up helps you use the phrase beyond the exact example.

Practise a small set

Choose five sentences you expect to need. Cover the English column and recall the phrase from its meaning. Then say it in a short exchange. The next day, change the situation or the noun.

You can review the pattern behind an example in the grammar lessons. For a recording-and-review exercise, follow the speaking practice routine.

The British Council speaking resources offer further situational examples. The translations and dialogues on this page are original teaching examples, not copied transcripts.

Use one phrase today

Pick a sentence for a real task: asking a question, checking a time, or thanking someone. Practise a likely reply too. The phrase becomes useful when you can use it to exchange meaning.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Which sentences should I learn first?

Begin with requests, clarification, and situations you face regularly. A shop worker and a college student may need different starting sets.

Must I translate every sentence into Hindi?

Use the meaning to understand the phrase, then connect the English directly to the situation. Literal translation can produce unnatural wording.

Should I memorise every sentence on the page?

No. Practise a useful group, change the details, and use it in conversation. Being able to adapt a few phrases is more useful than recognising a long list.
