Seasons Names in English and Hindi: Meanings and Examples

Learn seasons names in English with Hindi meanings in Roman script, example sentences, a six-season comparison and a short vocabulary quiz.

◷ 5-minute read◈ Examples & tables✓ Hindi help in Roman script

The common four season names in English are spring, summer, autumn, and winter. “Fall” is another name for autumn, especially in American English. In India, you will also meet rainy-season vocabulary and a traditional six-season system. These systems describe seasons in different ways, so their names and months should not be mixed into one universal calendar.

This lesson gives Hindi meanings in Roman script, example sentences, and a comparison that helps you choose the right word for the situation.

Four season names at a glance

English name Hindi meaning (Hinglish) Original example
Spring Vasant / basant The garden looks colourful in spring.
Summer Garmi ka mausam We try to finish our outdoor work early in summer.
Autumn / fall Sharad; context ke hisaab se patjhad The story begins on an autumn afternoon.
Winter Sardi ka mausam My grandmother knits warm clothes in winter.

The Hindi meaning explains the general idea; it is not an exact mapping between every regional or traditional calendar. For example, “patjhad” refers to leaf fall, which does not happen at the same time for all trees and places.

Spring

Spring comes between winter and summer in the four-season sequence. In many places it is associated with warming weather and new plant growth, but local conditions vary.

We planted the seeds in spring.
Hindi meaning: Humne vasant mein beej lagaye.

Summer

Summer is generally the warmer season in a four-season description. Use “hot” for temperature and “summer” for the season; a hot day can occur outside the locally defined summer months.

It is unusually hot for this time of year.
Hindi meaning: Saal ke is samay ke hisaab se aaj kuch zyada garmi hai.

Autumn or fall

Both words refer to the same season in the four-season system. You may encounter “autumn” more often in British-style teaching and “fall” in American material. Choose the word suitable for your audience, and recognise both when reading.

Winter

Winter is generally the colder season in that system. Winter does not mean that every place has snow. Describe the weather you actually experience rather than assuming that a textbook illustration applies everywhere.

Six seasons in India: English equivalents

Traditional Indian seasonal vocabulary includes six names. The table below follows the broad Gregorian-month correspondence presented in the NCERT climate chapter. It is a learning reference, not a claim that weather changes on an identical date across India.

Traditional name English equivalent Broad month correspondence in the cited table
Vasanta / Vasant Spring March–April
Grishma Summer May–June
Varsha Rainy season July–August
Sharada / Sharad Autumn September–October
Hemanta / Hemant Pre-winter November–December
Shishira / Shishir Winter January–February

Only the names and broad correspondence are summarised here. Traditional calendar dates and regional weather patterns do not line up perfectly with fixed Gregorian month boundaries.

Hinglish help: Exam ya lesson mein agar “six seasons” poochha hai, to traditional names ka context dekhiye. Roz ki weather conversation mein apne shehar ka actual mausam batayiye.

Rainy season, monsoon, and weather

“Rainy season” describes a period when rain is common. In everyday Indian English, people often use “monsoon” when talking about seasonal rains. Meteorological descriptions are more specific, and timing varies by region.

Do not treat a six-season vocabulary table as a detailed local weather forecast. If you are arranging travel or an outdoor event, check current local weather information separately.

Word What it describes Example
Season A recurring part of the year Winter is my favourite season.
Weather Conditions at a particular time The weather is cloudy today.
Temperature How hot or cold it is The temperature fell overnight.
Rainy A condition with rain It was a rainy morning.

“Today is raining” is not the usual pattern. Say “It's raining today” or “Today is a rainy day.”

Use season names naturally

Prepositions

Use “in” for a general seasonal period:

  • We visit our cousins in summer.
  • The shop sells warm blankets in winter.

Use “on” for a particular day: “We went for a walk on a winter morning.” Use “during” when focusing on something happening within a period: “The road was repaired during the rainy season.”

Adjectives

“A summer holiday” and “a winter coat” use the season name before a noun. “A rainy afternoon” describes the weather. You can say “a cold summer evening” when the season and the day's conditions differ.

Capital letters

Season names are normally lowercase: spring, summer, autumn, winter. Capitalise them at the start of a sentence or where a proper name or title requires it.

For more sentence patterns, try the daily-use English sentences. Use the English numbers chart when practising dates and temperatures.

A short conversation

A: Which season do you enjoy most?
B: I like winter because the afternoons are comfortable where I live.
A: Does it snow there?
B: No. Our winters are usually mild.

The last answer explains local conditions instead of assuming that winter looks the same everywhere. Change the conversation to match your own experience.

Check your understanding

  1. Which is another name for autumn: fall or rain?
  2. Complete the sentence: We buy warm clothes ___ winter.
  3. Is “It is rainy today” about a season or today's weather?
  4. Which traditional name refers to the rainy season: Varsha or Hemanta?
  5. Correct the capitalisation: “My favourite season is Summer.”

Answers: 1. Fall. 2. In. 3. Today's weather. 4. Varsha. 5. “My favourite season is summer.”

Describe your season, not just its name

Write three sentences: the season where you live, today's weather, and something you do at this time of year. If you are building a study routine, add this task to the English learning plan.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Are there four or six seasons?

It depends on the system being discussed. The common English four-season sequence and the traditional Indian six-season system are different frameworks. Say which one you mean.

Do all countries have summer in the same months?

No. The Northern and Southern Hemispheres have opposite seasonal cycles, and local climate patterns vary. A month table needs geographical context.

Is autumn exactly the same as patjhad?

“Patjhad” is a useful teaching association in some contexts, but it should not be treated as a perfect calendar or botanical equivalent everywhere.
